VILLAGE HISTORY

In Johnsburg, we believe that you have to know where you’ve been to understand where you’re going. Originally settled in 1841 by German emigrants in search of freedom, personal liberty and opportunity, the community was incorporated as Sunnyside in 1956. On November 19, 1991, the Village of Sunnyside annexed the neighboring unincorporated area known as Johnsburg and later changed the name of the town from Sunnyside to Johnsburg. Throughout Johnsburg’s history, residents came together and pooled their resources for the betterment of the community. We are a community of neighbors helping neighbors, a philosophy highlighted in the slogan utilized during the 1991 Sunnyside/ Johnsburg annexation. Today the "neighbor helping neighbor" philosophy persists and is exhibited through the generous efforts of our citizens and civic organizations who continue moving Johnsburg forward toward a bright and successful future.

Johnsburg consists of approximately 7,000 residents. Schools that provide exceptional educational opportunities is paramount to the health and success of a community. Johnsburg is proudly served by two outstanding school systems - Johnsburg School District #12, serving grades K-12 and St. John the Baptist Catholic School, serving grades K-8. Inspiring youth to be productive life-long learners is the philosophy behind what makes our schools exceptional.

Four major park facilities provide outdoor venues for families to enjoy playgrounds, picnic areas, ball courts and walking paths. Several athletic fields serve both youth and adult sports programs including baseball, softball, soccer, lacrosse and football leagues. A sled hill and ice rink provide some outdoor fun during winter months.

The community has many sports leagues that kids can join such as: Johnsburg Boys Baseball League, Johnsburg Pigtail league, Northern United FC Soccer, and Johnsburg Jr. Skyhawks football league. See our Community Groups for more information.

Having the most waterfront of any community along the Chain O’ Lakes, Johnsburg maintains a boat launch facility at which residents can launch boats and other watercrafts. We are also home to the Community Sailing School at the historic Pistakee Yacht Club, which has been part of the community for more than 120 years.
