OPEN BURNING OF LANDSCAPE WASTE
The smoke from the burning of landscape waste can be an irritant to the respiratory system.  Also, please remember that COVID-19 can cause asthma attacks and result in pneumonia and acute respiratory distress.  Excessive burning will only further complicate these conditions so please remember to be courteous and considerate to your neighbors.   There are other alternatives to burning your landscape materials. For more information, click here.

If you choose to burn, make sure you do so in  accordance with the regulations established by the McHenry County Health Department. Landscape waste may be burned only on Saturdays and Sundays from dawn through dusk during the months of April and May. The burning of landscape waste is permitted only when winds are less than 10 mph. The burning site must be a minimum of 100’ from any principal structure and supervised at all times by an individual at least 18 years of age. Burning material should be dry so that the burn will not result in excessive smoke.  A fire extinguisher, garden hose or water source must be available at the burning site. Prohibited at all times is the burning of manure, garbage, construction materials, litter, etc. on any property. We have seen and received multiple complaints of residents not complying with the ordinance, please be advised violators will be cited.

Recreational fires and ceremonial fires are exempt but may not be larger than 3’x3’x3’ and cannot contain leaves, grass or shrubbery clippings. Click here for the requirements.
