Sewer Infrastructure Extension to Provide Service for More Residents, Businesses in Johnsburg

A sewer infrastructure project that has been discussed, planned, and initiated for over 15 years has now expanded to serve an even wider variety of residents and businesses in the Village of Johnsburg, Illinois. The most recent phase of the sewer extension project provides cost-effective sewer services for hundreds of properties that will be utilized by additional users.

New Village Sewer Infrastructure Improvements

In 2007, the Village first embarked on the West Side Sewer Collection System, extending it to serve 165 homes and businesses. While this was a significant accomplishment for Johnsburg, it was clear there was more work to be done.

For years, the Village had made it a priority to expand the sewer system to serve businesses along North Johnsburg Road. With the extension of sewers into the North Sewer Service Area, this goal was accomplished in the fall of 2021.

The North Sewer Service Area Expansion provides the following improvements:

  • The project extended sewer service from the previous terminus on Sunnyside Beach Drive, north to Lakeview Avenue.
  • Residents and businesses in need of wastewater treatment alternatives now have connections available at locations such as Angelo’s Market, Raymond’s Bowl, Sunnyside Tavern, and Johnsburg Mobile.
  • The extension sets the platform for future extensions into adjacent neighborhoods and will eventually connect to the Oakcreek Townhomes property.
  • Due to the timing of the extension, the system was able to be extended to connect with the David G. Dominguez Municipal Center.

Upon the initiation of this extension phase, the infrastructure for 25 immediate connections was completed in the North Sewer Service Area. The completion of the phase this past fall also implemented infrastructure for an additional 250 connections.

Waste Water Project History

The village began exploring the idea of implementing wastewater services outside of traditional septic systems in the early 2000s, weighing the pros and cons of the complex issue, informing residents of professional research, addressing cost concerns, and determining the financial and functional benefits.

Support was obtained for the project in multiple forms:

Since that time, the Village has made great strides in accomplishing the goal of providing extended sewer connections, and milestones have been reached in phases. The most recent improvement in the North Sewer Service Area will allow residents and businesses to start connecting in 2022.

Residential, Commercial Benefits of Sewer Extension

The implementation of the sewer extension across a larger portion of Johnsburg provides existing businesses and homeowners with clean, effective wastewater treatment. These benefits provide a better quality of life with environmental protections that are supported by the use of a professional sewer system, instead of traditional septic.

With sewer services in place, potential hazards associated with septic systems are removed, as well as the expense and required maintenance. Additionally, modern housing and commercial properties are supported by professional wastewater infrastructure. There is also the potential for the increased extension to a few vacant parcel developments.
