EV Readiness - 3rd Cohort

Interested in purchasing an electric vehicle? EVs continue to grow in popularity and are expected to account for 50% of auto sales by 2030. Driving an EV saves owners money on gas but also helps reduce greenhouse gasses and pollution.
In order to provide safe, reliable electricity and advance sustainable transportation, the Village's Development & Government Affairs Committee, Village staff and ComEd External Affairs and Electrical Division are working together to meet the future EV charging needs regarding new development projects in Johnsburg. The Village also is working with the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus on a number of objectives to help increase the number of electric charging stations in the community. Stay tuned for more details.
In the meantime, there are several resources available to help residents make an EV purchase or find a location to charge their car.
Policies and Processes
The Village of Johnsburg is committed to exceptional customer service for applicants who wish to install electric vehicle charging stations. To promote the continued advancement of EV infrastructure, the Village will:
- Provide clear guidelines about the EV charging station permitting and inspection process in our permit packet.
- Use an EV charging station-specific permit application and make it available online.
- Process EV charging station applications within seven (7) business days.
- Complete EV charging station inspections within one (1) days after the installation/request for an inspection, increase likelihood please schedule three (3) days in advance.
- Provide a list of Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) certified EV charging station installers.
Benefits of EVs
Electric vehicles have several advantages over conventional cars:
Energy Efficient
EVs convert over 77% of the electrical energy from the grid to power at the wheels. Conventional gasoline vehicles only convert about 12% to 30% of the energy stored in gasoline to power at the wheels.
Lower Emissions
In Johnsburg, greenhouse gas emissions caused by on-road transportation account for 32% of total emissions. EVs do not emit tailpipe emissions, which makes them a cleaner option to operate compared to gasoline or diesel vehicles, especially if charged with renewable energy.
Improved Air Quality
Lower emissions lead to better local air quality.
Performance Benefits
Electric motors provide quiet, smooth operation and stronger acceleration.
Reduced Maintenance Costs
EVs have fewer moving parts and don’t require oil changes, tune-ups, cooling system flushes, and other common maintenance services needed for traditional vehicles.
Reduced Energy Dependence
Electricity is a domestic energy source.
Equity
The Village of Johnsburg will continue to share information about EV incentives to let residents know about available funding opportunities that could make EVs more affordable.
